Ladybug Infestation: How to Get Rid of Ladybugs Fast

ladybug prevention

Ladybugs are great assets to your garden. They keep aphid populations under control as well as other insects that may be harmful to your plants. In that respect, they are quite useful – until they’re not. Ladybugs are great in their place (your garden), but when they find their way into your home, they can quickly become a problem.

If you look around one day and realize, “There are ladybugs in my home!” you are probably on your way to having a ladybug infestation in your home – if you don’t have one already.

Here’s how to get rid of ladybugs fast.

Where do Ladybugs Hide?

The first thing to understand when you have a ladybug infestation in the house is that they aren’t harmful. They are not associated with or linked to any diseases. They won’t hurt you. The worst thing they do is secrete a foul-smelling yellowish fluid when they feel threatened. This is a protective instinct but is harmless. The worst it does is stain some surfaces.

Ladybugs like to spend their winter hibernation clustered together in masses. They will seek out protected areas like hollows in tree trunks, cracks in rocks, and other places that are warm and sheltered. In your home, they will seek out similar spots which can be behind pictures, in walls, and in cabinets or drawers.

When one ladybug finds a spot that is suitable for hibernation, it will release a pheromone that draws others. It is not unusual to find dozens of ladybugs in these situations – sometimes hundreds. This can lead to some ladybugs accidentally finding their way into your living areas.

Ladybug infestation causes in your home are typically due to seeking suitable hibernation during the winter. Knowing what attracts ladybugs can help you get rid of them. Like any other household pest, they will enter your home seeking three things: Food, water, and harborage. If they find any of these things, they see it as an invitation to take up residence.

Knowing how to get rid of ladybugs is not always very easy or straightforward. Once an infestation takes over, it can be tough to eliminate without professional help. Ladybug spray and ladybug repellent may be effective for smaller populations but will hardly make a dent in larger populations.

The good news is, many of the ladybugs will find their way back outside once the temperatures warm up and spring arrives.

If you can find the nest you can use a vacuum to get rid of the majority of them, but rarely will you get rid of them all, especially if the population is large.

The best thing you can do is hire a professional exterminator. They have the tools and knowledge to quickly and effectively get rid of your pest problem, even a stubborn ladybug infestation.
